In a three year project at the School of Nursing, University of Pennsylvania, uniform gerontological content and clinical experiences with older adults were developed and implemented for all sophomores, juniors, and seniors. During the period of the project, these students cared for older adults in acute, home, and long-term settings. In addition, an enriched clinical experience was designed for selected senior students at a continuing care retirement community for selected senior students at a continuing care retirement community providing residential, personal, intermediate, and skilled care services. Despite the general success of this integration of theoretical and clinical content in aging, a decision was made at the conclusion of the project to require a course on nursing care of the older adult during the junior year. The outcome of this project suggested the need in baccalaureate programs of nursing for a curriculum which reflects both integration of content and required course work in gerontology.
