
Colostrum is often seen as a simple topic to get right on farms, however good colostrum management is rarely achieved. Assessing all of the 5Qs of colostrum is a quick, structured approach to this area. Quantity, Quality, Quickly and sQueaky clean are the four on farm areas followed by Quantifying the results. Regular monitoring mainly using calf serum total protein can be used as a good team building exercise to maintain good farm team motivation. This work can greatly improve calf health, farm economics as well as strengthening the vet, farm team relationship.
