The recent research assessment exercise (RAE) probably went unnoticed by most nurses, despite nursing's poor performance. To many it was just another academic rating exercise, exclusive to universities and institutions of higher education. However, this 4-year-long review of the state and progress of research revealed some interesting and important questions for the future of nursing research.
