A screening method for inhibitory activity against Streptococcus mutans dextransucrase (EC 2.4.1.5) was devised and applied to culture broths of microorganisms isolated from soil and sea water. Of about 7,000 tested, only one strain, identified as a species of Streptomyces neyagawaensis on the basis of morphological and physiological studies, was found to produce a strong low molecular weight inhibitor of about 700–800 daltons in size.
