More than 40% of the total 280 million-ha of irrigated land in the world are planted in rice. More than 90% of the world rice is produced in Asia, where many major rivers are now tapped out during the dry season and where competition for water for urban and farm use is escalating. Finding ways of irrigating rice with less water is critical to sustaining the harvest of this crop.
