Bio-Based EPDM Rubber and Sustainable EPDM Compounding

Abstract

ARLANXEO Performance Elastomers has made a pioneering move toward exploring a future based on renewable resources, by developing the world's first bio-based EPDM rubber commercialized under the tradename Keltan Eco. Regular EPDM products, including ARLANXEO Performance Elastomers' Keltan EPDM products, are produced from fossil raw materials, that is, the ethylene and propylene are produced via cracking of natural oil. Keltan Eco EPDM is a recent ARLANXEO Performance Elastomers' development, produced from bio-based ethylene. Keltan Eco is produced in the ARLANXEO's EPDM plant in Triunfo, Brazil, by means of a solution polymerization process using Ziegler Natta catalyst technology. Polymers of ethylene, propylene, and a nonconjugated diene represent an important class of elastomers. The fully saturated, flexible polymer backbone provides excellent resistance against oxygen, ozone, heat, and irradiation and, thus, is the product of choice for outdoor and elevated-temperature applications.
