The challenge of imaging below the basalt layering, characteristic of the NE Atlantic margins can be met by searching for elements of mode converted energy. Careful removal of multiple energy reveals events below the top basalt which image with stacking velocities slower than the p-wave trend typical of the region. Examination of the energy and subsequent elimination of alternative sources suggests that mode conversion occurs at the top and base of the basalt. The symmetry of the raypath and conversion back to p-wave energy at top basalt allows recording with conventional streamer and processing with the standard set of software.
