The need to obtain an objective measurement of grip strength is discussed in the light of a review of the literature on grip strength. A study undertaken to obtain norms which could be used in the department at Addenbrooke's Hospital is described. This study found significant differences in grip strength between the sexes, between age groups, and between bulb sizes. A slight difference between right and left hands was detectable in women but not in men. A second study was then conducted to explore further the absence of a significant statistical difference between left and right hands in grip strength of men. It was concluded that patients' occupations must be considered when determining whether they have achieved full recovery of power grip following injury.
