We have developed the passive-type biofuel cell having 3.0mW/cm2 power at 500 mV and 800 mV open circuit voltage. This performance has been achieved by introducing 2-amino-1,4-naphthoquinone (ANQ) as an anode electron mediator. Although the redox potential of ANQ, -0.36V (vs Ag/AgCl) is much more negative than that of vitamin K3 (VK3), -0.22V, the kcat value of diaphorase (DI) against ANQ, 620 sec-1 is not so small in comparison with that of VK3, 1300 sec-1. This character has been maintained even in the immobilized electrode modified by DI and ANQ, so that the biofuel cell power has increased from 1.5mW/cm2 of VK3 to 3.0mW/cm2 of ANQ.
