Abstract

Summary: The comments concern the paper [\textit{C. Jeffries}, ibid. 34, No. 4, 386- 405 (1992; Zbl 0759.35047)]. Poynting's theorem, and the use of Poynting's vector to express the transfer of energy from one part of the system to another in terms of the electric field \(E\) and the magnetic field \(H\) are shown to follow directly from Maxwell's equations and to be as applicable to steady state situations (such as a lamp connected to a battery) as to radiation.
