NUMERICAL INTEGRATION IS THE PROCESS of approximating the value of a definite integral from a set of numerical values of the integrand. When applied to the computation of a double integral of a function of two independent variables, the process is sometimes called "mechanical cubature". One of the earliest investigations of the problem of mechanical cubature was made by Appel [2] in a paper in which he proposed formulas for the rectangle and the rectangular parallelopipedon.
