On the Stability of Variable-Stepsize Nordsieck BDF Methods

Abstract

Die Verf. studieren die asymptotische Stabilität der rückwärts genommenen Differentiationsformeln in Nordsieck-Form auf nichtäquidistanten Gittern. Bei einem Wechsel der Schrittweite wird die Nordsiecksche Interpolationstechnik verwandt. Damit sind bei der Stabilitätsanalyse die Normen der Produkte der sich mit dem Schrittweitenwechsel ebenfalls verändernden Verfahrensmatrizen abzuschätzen. Im Falle der zweischrittigen Verfahren gewinnen die Verf. notwendige und hinreichende Bedingungen für die Folge der Gitter, die Stabilität ergeben. Für die k-schrittigen Verfahren, \(k=3,4,5,6\), berechnen die Verf. Intervalle \([0,r^*_ k]\), so daß die Verfahren stabil sind, sofern die Quotienten \(r=h_{j+1}/h_ j\) zweier aufeinander folgender Schrittweiten innerhalb dieser Intervalle liegen. Es werden auch derartige Intervalle berechnet, wenn Schrittweitenstrategien verwendet werden, bei denen jede zur Verwendung kommende Schrittweite genau bzw. mindestens p Schritte lang konstant gehalten wird. Die erhaltenen Ergebnisse verallgemeinern Resultate von \textit{C. W. Gear} und \textit{K. W. Tu} [ibid. 11, 1025-1043 (1974; Zbl 0292.65041)] und \textit{L. W. Jackson} und \textit{R. D. Skeel} [ibid. 20, 840-853 (1983; Zbl 0514.65058)].
