The sequence of Laguerre polynomials is known to be self inverse in the group of Sheffer sequences, and our main goal here is to furnish a generating function characterization of all the self inverse Sheffer sequences. We present our result in the broader context of generalized Appell sequences of arbitrary order and obtain it by solving a system of functional equations.
