Ten years ago, a pilot project was launched from the University of Liverpool to explore whether it would be feasible to collect data from small animal veterinary practices and diagnostic laboratories. Surveillance data were well established on the farm side – through data collected by APHA and its previous guises, the SAC and AFBI. Defra and the Animal Health Trust were collecting equine data, but small animal data were in short supply. The pilot project was called the Small Animal Veterinary Surveillance Network (SAVSNET), and last week those involved with the network hosted a conference to show how far SAVSNET has come in 10 years and where it is going next.
