A Twist of Light The angular momentum of photons can be used to encode and transmit information. Cai et al. (p. 363 ) developed a method for generating and emitting controllable orbital angular momentum states of light from a reconfigurable and scalable silicon photonic chip. Using micro-ring resonators embedded with angular gratings allowed the imprinting of optical angular momentum on the light propagating in the whispering gallery modes of the resonator. The method may enable large-scale integration of optical vortex emitters on complementary metal-oxide–semiconductor-compatible silicon chips.

| selected citations These citations are derived from selected sources. This is an alternative to the "Influence" indicator, which also reflects the overall/total impact of an article in the research community at large, based on the underlying citation network (diachronically). | 836 | |
| popularity This indicator reflects the "current" impact/attention (the "hype") of an article in the research community at large, based on the underlying citation network. | Top 0.1% | |
| influence This indicator reflects the overall/total impact of an article in the research community at large, based on the underlying citation network (diachronically). | Top 0.1% | |
| impulse This indicator reflects the initial momentum of an article directly after its publication, based on the underlying citation network. | Top 0.1% |
