In a partial replication of an experiment reported in this Journal [Lockhead and Byrd, J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 70, 387–389 (1981)] possessors of absolute pitch were tested for pitch identification of sine tone stimuli. Performance was far from pefect, but considerably better than the results previously reported. Deviations from perfect identification were both systematic and more frequency-specific than the original study. Some suggested reasons for the discrepant findings and some general remarks about absolute pitch are offered.
