Ethernet passive optical network EPON has integrated the advantages of low-cost Ethernet equipment and low-cost and high-bandwidth passive fiber optic network, which is deemed as the best solution for broadband access network of next generation. The architecture of EPON is asymmetrical, based on a tree and branch topology utilizing passive splitters as shown in Figure 1. All the transmissions in EPON are between one Optical Line Terminal (OLT) and multiple Optical Network Units (ONUs).
