Photothermal techniques use optically induced heat fluxes to probe the optical and thermal properties of materials. The techniques can be used for spectroscopy, measurement of thermal parameters, non-destructive evaluation, energy transfer studies and spectroscopic depth profiling. A large literature on the various photothermal techniques and their applications now exists, and several books are available giving a good overview of various aspects of the subject (cf Bibliography).
