Reviewing ethnolinguistic vitality: The case of Anglo‐Nigerian Pidgin

Abstract

Depuis les annees 1970, un des concepts les plus marquants de la sociolinguistique est celui de la vitalite ethnolinguistique, developpe par Giles, Bourhis et Taylor, 1997. Ce concept permet d'evaluer le 'degre de vie' d'un langage dans une societe et est generalement mis en rapport avec la notion de groupes ethniques. L'auteur propose une critique de ce concept qu'il juge parfaitement adequat lorsqu'il s'agit d'apprecier le degre de vie d'une langue mais pas dans le cas de langues telles que les creoles et pidgins. Selon l'auteur, on ne peut attribuer a ces deux types de langue une composante ethnique puisqu'il est impossible de leur conferer une assignation sociale et ethnique locale. Dans ce cas, le concept de 'vitalite ethnolinguistique' n'est pas applicable aux creoles et pidgins. Pourtant ces langues presentent une grande vitalite ; c'est notamment le cas du pidgin anglo-nigerien pris en exemple par l'auteur
