Perception study on the implementation of standards of training, certification and watch-keeping for fishing vessels (STCW-F 1995) among fishermen in Terengganu, Malaysia

Abstract

STCW-F 1995 is a safety requirement for all fishing personnel. To preserve Terengganu fishing industry, all the fishing vessel personnel must have a basic precaution for safety at sea as mentioned in STCW-F. The objective of this research is to identify the perception from Malaysian fishermen on the implementation of STCW-F to Malaysia fishing industry. The method used for this paper by conducting interview/questionnaires with fisherman around Terengganu districts. Analysis used in this research are reliability analysis, mean analysis, normality test and Kruskal-Wallis Test. Factors such as cost, awareness, attitude, government/fisherman association role and lack of facilities are among question to be answers in this research. Data gather are real issues faced by Terengganu's Fishermen. Perception among fisherman are the same, means no significant different on 3 factors which are cost, awareness & attitude and Government/Fishermen Association Role & Lack of Facilities between years of involvement in fishing industry. The factors that need to be concerned by the government. All these factors are critical part of this research due to fisherman had agreed and statically analysis shown high Mean on the questionnaires.
