In this paper, a new, flexible, crosslinked polyethylene insulation designed for medium voltage power distribution applications is reviewed. The material combines the long coveted electrical performance of (water) tree retardant crosslinked polyethylene (TR-XLPE) and the flexibility of ethylene propylene rubber (EPR) formulations. With projected long life based on accelerated cable (wet) electrical aging tests and very low dielectric costs, this is expected to address the goal of a value added distribution cable system at low total life cycle costs, while providing much needed cable flexibility and ease of installation.
