Mitigation of EAF Induced Problems

Abstract

Electrical arc furnaces (EAF) are commonly employed in industry to produce molten steel by melting iron and scrap steel. EAF can be a source of power quality problems and a potential threat to nearby generators. In this paper, the power quality problems induced by a 40 MVA EAF located in the Tennessee power system solved by FACTS and energy storage system (ESS) technologies is studied. How EAF operation can affect a power system is analyzed by giving a detailed discussion about the function of X/R ratio. A cascade-multilevel converter (CMC) based STATCOM with high bandwidth is proposed for EAF induced voltage fluctuation mitigation. Simulation and experimental results show that the FACTS and ESS technology can efficiently and rapidly solve the EAF induced power quality problems
