Femtoslicing in Storage Rings

Abstract

The generation of ultrashort synchrotron radiation pulses by laser-induced energy modulation of electrons and their subsequent transverse displacement (” femtoslicing”) was demonstrated at the Advanced Light Source in Berkeley. More recently, a femtoslicing facility was commissioned at BESSY II in Berlin, and another project is in progress at the Swiss Light Source. The paper reviews the principle of femtoslicing and its technical implementations.
