This paper presents a detailed study of the VSC-HVDC system along with the related cases of paralleling two similar VSC-HVDC systems. A basic VSC-HVDC system is designed with controllers on either side of the system. The system is further expanded by connecting a similar VSC-HVDC system in parallel for enhancing the reliability. The control scheme considered is a direct control mode having a faster current response. The analysis of the system is carried out through simulations in MATLAB/Simulink platform. Simulation results show the performance of the VSC-HVDC system and illustrate the stability of the controllers under dynamic conditions. This paper also proposes paralleling of VSC-HVDC systems that are interconnected through a cable for increasing the reliability of the power transfer to the AC grid.
