Substation automation: Matlab and OPC driven substation monitoring system

Abstract

Power utilities, as a standard, adopt Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems for efficient power system operation, maintenance and development. The automation systems (viz. SCADA) need flexibility in design and its maintenance, for utilities to leverage maximum benefit apart from possibilities of being vendor locked. Over the years, various open communication protocols and platforms have been introduced leading to ease of integrating Intelligent Electronic Devices (IEDs) ultimately leading towards more flexible SCADA systems. This has contributed immensely in providing possibilities for development of user based applications for implementing SCADA systems. This paper provides an architecture and implements an application on Matlab platform for acquiring real time data from IED/RTU using Open Process Control (OPC) technology for substation monitoring.
