This paper presents the complete design and operation of IRIS-SP, also known as Swimming Pool (SP) model which is a prototype ROV for operation at about 30 meters depth. The design also demonstrates an effective hardware - software combination that can assist a human operator to control the ROV from a platform for underwater search and housing equipment used for surveillance, monitoring as well as data collection depending upon the situation at hand. IRIS-SP is the result of meticulous planning, research, analysis, manufacturing and testing. The ROV has been optimized for size, weight and cost which makes it a competitive entry level platform. Special features include a control system composed of custom printed circuit boards which allow the control system to achieve optimal capability, precision and reliability along with the necessary software codes developed in-house. The control unit is connected to the on-board system using tether. The ROV features full speed control in three axes of motion (two translational and one rotational), provided by in-house designed thrusters.
