Abstract

Information and communications technologies are a double-edged sword, allowing us to better manage systems such as the environment and energy use. However ICTs are also very resource intensive. The net effect is unclear. In this paper, the major issues related to the life cycle energy and environmental components of ICT are presented. Issues discussed include impacts from manufacturing, using, and disposing of ICT and ICT systems, including e-commerce purchases, wired and wireless communications.
