The design of a synchronous reluctance motor with a segmental rotor is described. Three types of rotor configuration have been proposed and evaluated. The behavior of these motors are investigated by finite element analysis. The effects of cross coupling magnetization and magnetization saturation on the inductances are also demonstrated. An experimental synchronous reluctance motor based on the analysis results has been fabricated for a feasibility study.
