This paper presents a novel Planar Inverted F-Antenna (PIFA) having a reconfigurable frequency operating bandwidth. The physical mechanism for altering the bandwidth is by varying the width of the feedline. This is achieved using a pair of microwave switches. The frequency bandwidth can be reconfigured between 3 discrete values. This antenna is suitable for use within portable devices and will have applications in next generation wireless communications systems particularly those based on Cognitive Radio and Spectrum Aggregation.
