A wideband monopolar plate-patch antenna

Abstract

A novel wideband monopolar plate-patch antenna has been proposed and successfully implemented. The impedance bandwidth of the proposed antenna can be greatly enhanced when the two ground plates are placed at the edges of the loading square patch of the planar monopole and proper widths of W/sub 1/ and W/sub 2/ are chosen. An impedance bandwidth of about 8.7% has been obtained for the proposed antenna, which is as large as three times that of a corresponding monopolar wire-patch antenna. The proposed antenna has wideband and low-profile characteristics, and could be potentially useful and easily built into terminal cases for practical wireless communications applications.
