In Colombia, there are areas not connected to the national electricity grid because of different socioeconomic factors, establishing territories under conditions of vulnerability. In this sense, any initiative aiming to solve this growing situation is imperative. Savonius rotors have been widely implemented and studied due to their numerous advantages for small-scale generation. The investigation of this type of rotors as well as the implementation of geometric changes with the aim of improving their efficiency, are potentially feasible solutions to provide electricity to off-grid populations from the national network in remote areas of the country. Therefore, the study of a Savonius rotor and the analysis of a modified geometry was made using CFD in a 2D domain. The SST model k-ω was selected for a turbulent flow condition. As a result, an alternate configuration is proposed that could potentially achieve higher yields at low TSRs.
