
The modular multilevel converter (MMC) is becoming the dominant scalable topology for medium to high-power conversion systems. It is currently used in High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) applications. The operation and control of MMC is still challenging; thus, intense research has been done in this area. In this paper, the MMC system structure is briefly described, then, the dynamic model of MMC is presented. Two control strategies are reviewed; one for capacitor voltage balancing and the other for circulating current suppression. Moreover, simulations of the control approaches are conducted using MATLAB/Simulink and the obtained results verified the expected performance.
