An overview is presented of the performance evaluation of discrete manufacturing systems for the practicing engineer. The role of performance evaluation in today's manufacturing firm is discussed. Common techniques for performance evaluation are reviewed, with an indication of where and when these methods are most likely to be beneficial. An example of how performance evaluation can be used in the design of a simple manufacturing cell is also given. Recent trends in this area are examined. >
