High‐fliers are a vanishing breed. The demographic changes which have recently begun to have a noticeable effect in the education system will soon work their way through into graduate recruitment. This has consequences for the process of assessment for fast‐track development into middle and senior management positions. On one estimate, from the Association of Graduate Recruiters, there will be a shortfall of several thousand graduate recruits by the end of the century.
