Pre-season applications of heptachlor to alfalfa were used to establish gradients of Egyptian alfalfa weevil, Hypera brunneipennis Boheman, or alfalfa weevil, H. postica (Gyllenhal), larval levels. Correlations of larval numbers and 1st cutting hay yields disclosed that every increase of 1 larva/sweep at the larval peak was associated with a yield reduction of 9.1 lb of hay. Economic injury levels calculated indicate when artificial control measures are not economically justified.
