Wistar diabetic fatty (WDF/Ta-/a) rats were developed by Ikeda et al. (1981) to provide a rat model of non-insulindependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM). Human NIDDM is typically characterized by adult onset and varying degrees of obesity, hyperglycemia, hyperinsulinemia, insulin resistance, glucose intolerance, and peripheral neuropathy. To produce a model demonstrating such characteristics, these investigators crossed the genetically obese Zucker (fa/fa) rat with the somewhat carbohydrate-intolerant lean Wistar Kyoto rat. H. Ikeda and T. Matsuo of the Takeda Chemical Industries have kindly provided the following detailed history of the resulting WDF/Ta-/a strain:
| selected citations These citations are derived from selected sources. This is an alternative to the "Influence" indicator, which also reflects the overall/total impact of an article in the research community at large, based on the underlying citation network (diachronically). | 16 | |
| popularity This indicator reflects the "current" impact/attention (the "hype") of an article in the research community at large, based on the underlying citation network. | Average | |
| influence This indicator reflects the overall/total impact of an article in the research community at large, based on the underlying citation network (diachronically). | Average | |
| impulse This indicator reflects the initial momentum of an article directly after its publication, based on the underlying citation network. | Average |
