Eavesdropping on Evensong

Abstract

oughly to be applauded. Finally, another Belgian group, La Morra, have recorded a programme of mostly sorrowful secular music for Marguerite of Austria, Dame de Deuil (Et'cetera KTC 4011, rec 2005, 62'). The chief source for the pieces is the manuscript Brussels, Bibliotheque Royale 228, the larger of Marguerite's two chansonniers, and the disc contains a varied selection of different song forms and dances. La Morra is a largely instrumental group, with only one vocalist, Els Janssens, who is also made to read texts, sometimes over the instrumental accompaniment. The reliance on a single singer-excellent though she is-as well as the concentration on doleful repertory does mean that the recording is slightly monochrome as a listening experience. Perhaps more one for dipping into than hearing all the way through, this is nonetheless another highly worthwhile project, which, along with the previous two CDs, underlines the wealth of fine ensembles at work in the Low Countries at present.
