Summary: The thermodynamics of some non-equilibrium systems composed of matter and radiation is analysed. It is shown that a simple theory based on extended irreversible thermodynamics (EIT) provides a formulation which is consistent with the second law for situations in which the time variation of the radiative flux cannot be neglected. The theory also ensures thermodynamic stability. The results are applied to make some estimations of the generalized temperature in the stars.
