Some visual observations, such as the detection of patterns in conditions of weak contrast, or near the limit of resolution, raise psychological questions which are usually ignored in presentations to physics students. The demonstrations described are intended to make students more aware of the power of the eye and brain, as well as of their capacity sometimes to mislead the observer.
