Although the movement in the Roman Catholic church known as Modernisn received its name in a Papal Encyclical of 1907, and officially perished with the issue of a Papal Motu Proprio of 19IO, it can by no means be historically confined within these dates. The tendencies to which it gave tangible expression are in fact increasingly discernible in koman Catholicism from the era of the French Revolution. It would
