On the Lexical Semantics of Affixal 'Want' in Inuktitut

Abstract

Chaque membre de la famille des langues inuites possede un affixe verbal ayant le sens de vouloir. Toutefois, cet affixe a generalement ete analyse comme un verbe ayant sa propre structure propositionnelle et comme introduisant un sujet volitionnel. En se basant plus particulierement sur l'inuktitut, l'A. montre ici que cet affixe doit plutot etre considere comme un modal sans structure argumentale, et qu'il peut etre caracterise en terme de semantique lexicale comme une sorte de futur. La nature abstraite de la semantique de l'affixe permet ainsi d'expliquer les diverses significations qu'il vehicule et fournit la preuve d'un chainon manquant dans l'evolution du sens d'un morpheme allant de la volition au futur
