A few experts in phonics and some in linguistics disagree with this contention. These dissidents, in a decided minority, insist that the teaching of dictionary rules of syllabication is misleading and futile, a waste of children's time. Thus stand the opposing forces. Can this impasse be resolved? We believe it can, but only after a critical examination of the arguments of the majority and the minority parties in this dispute.
