The exact function of oral reading in present-day education is not clearly defined. A sizable number of teachers still conduct reading lessons by having pupils take turns reading aloud from materials which they have not previously read silently. This reading, the teachers maintain, gives them an opportunity to know exactly how well a child performs and also allows them to identify and correct word-recognition problems on the spot.
