Duchamp and the Artworld

Abstract

In "Duchamp's Mischief" (Critical Inquiry 7 [Summer 1981]: 747-60), Joel Rudinow tried to understand, if not exactly the achievement of Marcel Duchamp, then anyway his significance in modern art and philosophy. His remarks may cause us to reconsider our views about the artworld and Duchamp's role in it. Before looking at what Rudinow says about the artworld, it is worth looking at what some others have said about it. The term "artworld" owes its popularity to the fact that Arthur Danto used it as the title of a paper in 1964. Danto, however, has never been very clear-in that paper or anywhere else-about what exactly the term is supposed to stand for. Sometimes he wants to include works of art themselves in the
