Japanese Students and Japanese Politics

Abstract

and workers "invaded" the Diet (Parliament) in Tokyo, many Japanese felt that a full-scale revolution was in the offing. In the last analysis, however, the students were repelled, the Security Treaty forced through the Diet, and order restored. The conservative government of Prime Minister Kishi, seemingly victorious, was forced out of office a short time after the demonstrations. This incident showed that "government by demonstration," almost an institution in post-war Japan, can be an effective tool. It also proved that the Japanese student movement, led by the militant Zengakuren, was a dynamic force within Japanese society which could make itself felt far beyond the campus. The importance of the student movement, both within the university community and in broader society, is exemplified by the active role that the Zengakuren has played in recent years. Unlike the United States, where most students are traditionally unconcerned with public affairs and are generally uncritical of educational policies foisted upon them by administrators, the student movement in Japan has been one of the more vital aspects of student life.
