AMONG the archaic tablets from Uruk a few small groups stand out because of their unusual formats. Each presents a unique and rigidly standardized arrangement of columns, cases, signs, and negative space (uninscribed areas) on the tablet; and within each group, as far as can be understood, the subject matter is fixed and specific. The largest such group includes forty-eight tablets and deals with domestic herds. It is this corpus which is presented here.1
