SYNOPTIC ABSTRACTIncreasingly powerful computers are making Statistical Expert Systems possible. Several prototypes already exist, and have been described by numerous authors. Such systems, while controversial, are essential to achieving the full potential of the powerful statistical techniques developed in the last decades by bringing them within reach of an increasing number of general users. STALOG is an early prototype Statistical Expert System. It is aimed at conducting automated statistical analyses on Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) data. ESS is an Expert Statistical System that is not limited to MRI data, but can produce results with many types of datasets.
