SUMMARYNeotropical characiform fishes present two main trends of chromosomal evolution: some taxa show a heterogeneous pattern, with an extensive numerical and structural variation while others show a more homogeneous one, with a clear stability in their karyotype macrostructure. The implications of the populational features and some other conditions to these two general paths are discussed.
