Abstract

Le principe lors des interrogatoires de police, selon lequel les personnes qui ne parlent pas l'anglais devraient etre assistes par des interpretes, est acquis depuis longtemps dans la pratique juridique au Royaume-Uni. Cependant, tres peu d'elements sont connus a propos de l'ampleur avec laquelle et comment ce principe est reellement applique. L'objet de cette etude est de presenter un examen approfondi des pratiques d'interpretation courantes en matieres juridiques dans diverses situations judiciaires au Royaume-Uni. Que ce passait-il reellement lors de ces interventions; quels etaient les problemes specifiques associes a l'interpretation dans un cadre juridique; et quels etaient les problemes associes a l'interpretation entre la langue cantonnaise et la langue anglaise? Que peut nous reveler une etude approfondie des interpretes lors de leur interpretation dans des environnements de justice? Une methode ethnographique a ete adoptee pour rassembler et analyser les donnees. J'ai observe et enregistre quatre interventions d'interpretation auxquelles participaient des interpretes chinois. Le resultat essentiel de cette etude est que les services d'interpretations juridiques au Royaume-Uni sont fortement handicapes par leur mode d'organisation. Les activites des interpretes sont aussi tres influencees par les pratiques des institutions juridiques ainsi que par les differences linguistiques entre les langues chinoise et anglaise.
