The Data Distiribution Satellite (DDS), operating in conjunction with the planned space network, the National Research and Education Network and its commercial derivatieves, would play a key role in networking the emerging supercomputing facilities, national archives, academic, industrial, and government institutions. Centrally located over the US in geostationary orbit, DDS would carry sophisticated on‐board switching and make use of advanced antennas to provide an array of special services.
